  • To 1/1 or not to 1/1

How exciting is it to own an actual 1/1. Until this week I could not answer this question, as I've never even seen a one of one in person. Sure, they are on eBay and other secondary markets, but they command a price and probably your soul as well. It's a rare and lucky pull to find one in hobby boxes. If you look at the way Leaf presents their products, you'll find that it is possible. But understand that it will make a dent in your wallet and you really don't know what to expect.

On many occasions I've contemplated on purchasing the 2012 Leaf Best of Football. You'll get 2 cards in this hobby box. Some of the breaks that I have seen on YouTube were interesting at best. The variety of the hand drawn sketch to buy backs might not appeal to some collectors. And on the secondary market, it's very difficult to break even, let alone to make a profit. The "if" factor is a huge issue!

When my wife and I last visited our hobby shop, it was for collecting supplies. I specifically told her; "No matter what you see, don't purchase anything as this is just a visit to get collecting supplies". It's common for us guys to go after purchases that upset our significant others, it's rare that our significant others take on that role. Needless to say, the owner showed her a 2013 Leaf Legends of The Gridiron. Before I could even request to get my supply list completed, the Leaf transaction had taken place.

Upon arriving home, she opened the hobby box and there was a shock of horror on her face! She yelled; "That's It"? And I told her that this particular product has 1 card per box. I've also informed her that she needs to break boxes that have an average of 10 to 30+ packs with 5 cards or more per pack. As a tandem, she enjoys purchasing and breaking hobby boxes in that order and I enjoy carefully placing them in the appropriate protectors and cataloging the cards. Leaving the card in its original package made sense, since this card was a Beckett graded card in a 1/2" slab. The card alone must be a 1/4" card stock. It was placed in the box with a carefully cut out foam and lined with felt. On one side, it displayed a autograph of John David Crow! On the other side was a autograph of Archie Griffin. Both were cut signatures. The card itself made it known it was to honor Heisman trophy winners, in Griffins case his second. The only individual to win this coveted honor twice. I tried to find out if anyone knew the value of this card, in the end to no avail, I settled with not knowing the true value. In my mind, this item is something that gets passed down to generations in my family. Many, many years from now, this story would be told as I've written above that great, great grandma and grandpa purchased this in 2013.

I feel that everyone on this forum will have this honor and legacy of what is left behind with the unusual stories behind each collectible. Share with us your unique story, I'd like to read on the FIND!

I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.
