• Asking for advice

I just got this card; 1996 Topps Finest Brett Favre #120. I also received a card yesterday via a Topps online code contest. It's a 2012 Topps Eli Manning #40. They both have a protective film. On one side of the film it says; "Peel and remove coating". I have some questions regarding this protective film. My daughters boyfriend said to leave it on. I read that Beckett will grade a card with or with out the protective film. I've also read that with the film on, Beckett will grade the card on the basis of how the film looks. I assume if it has air bubbles or if it has creases, that will determine the surface grade. So here are my questions to anyone with cards like this, I feel the more members answer this question, I'll have a greater insight on this.

1) Do you leave the film on? Why?

2) Do you remove the film? Why?

3) As the card ages, does the film become sticky like old tape?

4) When did they start applying film?

5) When did they stop? And Why?

Thank's to everyone who can help me out with this!

I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.

Good questions - I wish I knew. I will check back and see what the experts say.

I have a couple of players who I like who I removed the plastic. I wasn't worried about the value dropping from 25 cents down to 20 cents I just wanted to be able to see the card better.
Favorite baseball players include: Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Kirby Puckett, Pete Rose, Tyler Colvin Mark Appel
Favorite football players include: Peyton Manning, John Elway, Daunte Culpepper, Mike Alstott, Blake Bortles, and Dri Archer
Collecting: 2012 Topps Mini 1987 topps... non-certified autos (in person or through the mail), autographed cards with bible verses

I had a Warrick Dunn Finest Rookie I bought like 15 or 18 yrs ago & I left the film on simply b/c it was in a toploader already & I never took it out. When I traded it not too terribly long ago, it looked like it was still brand new & would peel off easily. I'm sure if it is placed in a hot room, the film would probably melt but mine never did. I've heard that taking it off will decrease the value but most of the stuff from the 90's isn't worth much more than the cardboard it's printed on so to each his own I say. I always thought it looked cooler w/ the film but if you're going to keep it, do what looks best for you.
-Brady

Looking for mainly Cowboys, Andy Dalton

Ok, I'm looking forward to whatever research you find pertaining to this "Protective Card Film"!

That's the same remark I got when I first started my collection. My question was; "How do I start my football card collection". Collect what you like, it's your collection. I did not know that it actually reduces the value! WOW! Over a piece of plastic film.

Thanks!!

My very first redemption "Mail Day"

I've seen them on eBay, I've read about them on Knights Lance (Panini's Official Blog Site), but never actually had one until now. I'm still waiting on the other seven. Until then, I'm excited about this card.
