I have a few and have traded/sold some. From what I gather, they were cards released in a previous set, (i.e. 1997 UD football legends) and bought back by the company to re-release in a new product (2011 UD football legends). Those were already autographed from 1997 but I know other companies have bought stuff back to have signed. I have a Michael Young base from like 2003 Topps that was re-released hand signed & numbered to 86(i think) w/ COA from Topps in like 2007.

A good friend of mine has a 7year old who just started collecting last year that bought a 20 dollar mixed box of Wal-Mart baseball cards to start up his collection & pulled a buy back Derek Jeter Rookie that had been signed & numbered to around 32. It ended up being like a 1700 dollar card. I told him to stop collecting right then b/c he has nowhere to go but down, lol.

Yes, that is the same story I have to share. But bcw716 is correct in how or what buy back cards are. My daughters boyfriend had purchased a Walmart baseball pack, and a Hank Aaron was in the pack which was a buy back. He sold it that day for a little over a thousand dollars.
I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.

So does the card company buy it back from a card store? How do they get the word out about the buy back?

not sure. I'm assuming the secondary market, through ebay, card shows etc. I had seen a rumor a while back that Panini was contemplating & shopping around on ebay for the old Hogg Heaven inserts w/ the leather backs from like 95 to place as buy backs. Haven't seen anything yet so apparently it was just a rumor. With as weak as this draft class is going to shape up to be 2013 would be a good year to run them as far as i'm concerned.

Besides what bcw said where buy backs are purchased, I've actually had my older brother at those big time auction houses like Christies. He mentioned how rare sports cards are auctioned off by buyers whom place bids on phone or through a third party bidder. He told me that one of Babe Ruth's jersey was purchased by a big time card company. People who are HARD CORE Ruth collectors frown upon this. The collectors would carefully frame and then store the jersey in a vault. The card company will cut it into a million pieces and WHALLA! There's your jersey card! That is another type of buy back scenario. This is also true regarding baseball bats, football equipment, etc.
