  • The Irvin Collection

Here I will be uploading scans of my favorite Cowboy of all time Michael Irvin. I won't be putting up ALL of them because that would just be ridiculous.. I will be putting up my favorite and more rare cards in the collection. Because it is on here doesn't mean it's particularly valuable, except to me, and many are listed in Beckett lower than $1. One of the most intense players in NFL history captured on cardboard... Enjoy!

Because of not having been exposed to football in my past, I'll be watching a pre-game NFL show and finding out who some of these announcers are. In May I noticed an announcer named Marshall Faulk, I googled. Another, Dieon Sanders, and I googled again. Then the last person to speak was a very deep, powerful, and thoughtful reporter by the name of Michael Irving. Again, googled. I am always learning of these great HOF individuals. It's so good to be able to log on to CCW and actually see cards of these legends during their prime. Your collection is awesome and very inspiring to me. Great job 90'sTriplets! Two cards that I love are the '89 rookie and the Wid Card.
I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.

Of all the cards, I like the "Wild Cards" best! Great collection!

                    To 90's triplets,

I had a question in regards to the "Wild Card Stripes" card? One of my goals is to eventually collect every single 1991 Brett Favre Rookie cards ever made. I just looked into the Favre "Wild Card" series. As you add more points via the stripes, the card value rises to the point of CRAZY! Does this occur with the Irving cards as well?

If so, do you mind if I ask you what obstacles you encountered in order to get your cards?

How long did it take you?

Do you have all the stripes?

What secondary market did you utilize in order to get these cards?

And finally? You don't have to answer this question if it is personal, I understand, how much did you spend?

                    Thank you in advance!

                    Toshi

I found someone that was selling at a "buy it now" price on eBay, the Brett Favre 5, 10, 50, and 100. They want $499.00.

They are missing the 10 and 1000. The Beckett book value for the complete set of 6 cards is $2,240! WOWWWWW!

The other rare and very expensive Favre rookie card is the 1991 Stadium Club Superbowl. It is the same 1991 Stadium Club Brett Favre rookie card except it has a embossed Superbowl mark at the top right hand corner. It was distributed during the '91 Superbowl. From what I've researched, only 200 was available. A veteran collector who is also a Favre fan has said that there are probably only 50 to 75 left that are in mint condition. The remainder were probably damaged or thrown away as Favre was a nobody in '91 and a third string QB for the Falcons. In a CCW article, the estimated price for that card is $600.00. I did find one or two examples for a "buy it now" price for $524.99.

The last card that I have not seen is the 2009 Upper Deck #112B. This card is considered his Vikings rookie card, it is an example like his 1992 Stadium Club High Series that is considered his Greenbay Packers rookie card. It was printed in haste due to Favre showing up at the last minute at the Vikings head quarters and it is a picture of Favre holding up his Viking jersey. What was difficult for collectors was the fact that Upper Deck had to release this card in packs of SPX since most of their products were released. The price of this card is $135.00 according to a CCW article. The article also states that the 112C is a great alternative to the 112B. I found a 112C on eBay at the "buy it now" price of $89.95.

The best that I've got to rare Favre cards is the 1992 Stadium Club High Series which I was lucky in that I did not only get his rookie card, but I was able to get Series 1, 2, and High Series which is a total of 700 cards for $90.00. I did not realize that most cards produced in the '90's are considered worthless at best. That's ok with me as I really wanted his '92 Stadium Club. I do see his '92 single card on eBay for $80.00 to $100.00. So I did fine. My other favorite all time card is his 1991 Star Pics Auto of Favre. It is the only rookie auto card distributed. I got that at $51.00. Beckett lists this card at $120.00.

I have a lot of time on my hands, so I can pursue these cards at my leisure. I just do not have the funds to make such an investment but time will tell. I know the rest of Favre rookie cards are in the very inexpensive range of a couple of dollars at best. Thank you for sharing your Irving cards, you have made me even more adamant in my goal of acquiring and collecting Favre rookie cards!

Thanks, Toshi. If only one person looks at this thread and appreciates what I'm doing then I'm happy. There are about 1,500 Irvin cards out there. I have 514. Many of the cards I don't have I could get very easy by spending money on eBay and Check out my cards.com. A side note, I am going back to school to get my degree in animal science. With that being said I do not have the extra income I can spend on cards like I did when I was a manager at an Italian Restaurant in Dallas. I have to be very careful when searching and buying Irvin cards. A lot of research goes into my purchases.

With the Wild Card Stripe Set I'm not too sure why they are so rare. I had an opportunity to get the 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 stripe from '92 for $25 but didn't pull the trigger. I don't think it was up for a day before someone bought it. This set and the Pro Set Cincinnati FACT set are some of the rarest I've seen from the '90s. I probably won't ever have all of them.

Michael Irvin will never be as popular as Favre, but he is still sought after in the card market because he was the best receiver in Cowboy's history. There are 2 guys on the roster now that will probably end up having better stats, but I doubt they will have the finger jewelry he has. There is also something about 90's Cowboys football that can never be rivaled. I've never actually met anyone who likes Irvin as much as me but I know they are out there. Some of the bidding wars I've had on eBay are just ridiculous. And one of my card shops back in Plano had a guy come in one time wanting to buy all the Irvin cards he had. Luckily I pretty much found all of them before he got there.

The biggest obstacle I've encountered when building my collection are of course money. But if I had all the money in the world collecting wouldn't be as fun because I could just buy all the cards no matter what the price. The other obstacle is discipline. I love the Cowboys. Always have. Irvin is my favorite player but sometimes I can't pass up another Cowboys card. I try to JUST buy Irvin Cards and trade for other Cowboys because not many people have an abundance of Irvin Cards for trade.

Again thanks for following my collection. There will be many more cards coming!
