    To my fellow members,

The other day I noticed a correspondence from a familiar corporation. This was not just any corporation, this is a mega big ticket big bussiness giant in the realm of all and any collectors dream! Any product you can imagine in a collection, these guys have you covered. Maybe not Bert's "Paper Clip" collection. For those of you whom are in their 40's, you might remember the original cast of the famed "Sesame Street" and the infamous roommates, Ernie and Bert. Yes, that Bert! The "Paper Clip" collecting Bert with the banana shaped orange head.

Where am I going with this? Here we go. The Franklin Mint. Yes, that Franklin Mint. The company that can have your significant other purchase priceless items at significant prices, that you could not pay someone to take. The company that sells priceless collections of collector plates depicting the entire cast of "The Bold and the Beautiful". For those members whom are illiterate in the world of soap opera, SHAME ON YOU! The Bold and the Beautiful are only one of the most successful franchises ever to hit the day time prime time arena. How about the rare hand made mahogany wood 24 Karat Monopoly set. And lets not forget the Franklin Mint exclusive, worlds only, available for this one time offer of your choice of either a Justin Bieber, "Bieber Belieber" 14 carat plated cubic zirconia studded bracelet or the elegant "One Direction" 14 carat plated cubic zirconia studded bracelet. Both will play snippets from these artist most recent hits, and if you purchase both of these very rare bracelets, you will receive in this one time offer, a signed facsimile 8x4 autograph photo of Justin Bieber and One Direction.

In truth, we used to own the "Bold and the Beautiful" plates. And as I write this, in front of me, proudly displayed on our coffee table, I get to see our hand made mahogany 24 carat Monopoly set. Ours is a special set, it is a resting area for one of our cats, affectionately known as "Naughty Kitty"! It collects a huge majority of her wonderful soft and elegant fur. Yes, laugh it up now, in about 2,500 years, it will hold it's current value, $0.00. Did I make up the Bieber and One Direction bracelet? Yes, but I'm not surprised if they actually offer these items as well. Mrs. Toshi did order a complete set US State quarters and corresponding US Stamps set. She has all 50 states. She has 6 sets left to make her set complete. Good lord, I thought we only had 50 states? What other 6 states were added without my knowledge? I know I have short term memory lost from my injury, but I would recall an addition of 6 extra states! Well, it's really for the District of Columbia or Washington DC. And the other 5? The US Territories. Ok, call us lollipops! In reality, I did tell Mrs. Toshi that what she has paid for the 50 State quarter set with the stamps, it's actually below book value. How do I Know? My past collecting items were in the Philatelic and Numismatic venue of which I will discuss in the next paragraph. Franklin Mint knows that Mrs. Toshi will be completing her set. At this point, they will loose a valued collector. So it was no surprise that they mailed us a new debut set. Rare sports cards with corresponding stamps.

Wow!!! I got excited! Rare sports cards? Did I read that right? Or was I in a Vicodon drugged induced state of mind? Oh hell, I'm always in a Vicodon drugged induced state of mind. I had visions of a original Goudy Babe Ruth. Or a original Joe Namath Tall Boy? How about a Panini National Treasures 1/1 triple relic auto of Bart Starr, Brett Favre, and Aaron Rodgers? Or better yet, a 1909 ORIGINAL T-206 "Honus Wagner". I don't think so. What I expect is sports cards from the '90's junk card years. As for the stamps? Being a philatelist, I understand the dichotomy of the philately world. As I will share with members, the sports card collector has approximately 5 to 10 years of '90's junk cards to avoid with a small handful of high priced book valued cards. These are a small handful and far too few to take any notice. On the philatelic side, if your intention is to collect for fun? There are millions of stamps from hundreds of countries to choose from. The only difference is that from approximately 1940 to the present, which comes to 73 years of stamps, the huge majority are worth a tad above face value. Yes, if you had a 3 cent stamp, it might be worth $0.05 if your lucky. Unlike cards, stamps are actually official currency printed by the US. They are actual currency. Here is an example, at the start of the formation of the USPS, letters were paid for with currency. It wasn't until England produced the worlds first stamp, the Penny Black that the US took to follow through as well. It wasn't until the Civil War that the south resorted back to currency. You see, the north had the ability and equipment to print and produce coin and paper currency and stamps. The south did not have this ability and what they did have was far too limited and inconsistent at best. Even the process to obtain paper goods a commodity they could not produce which is what is needed to produce paper currency and stamps were minimal at best and these items were sub-standard. Don't even ask about coin currency, the limited supply of semi precious metal to mint coins was non-existent.

The South was not to be deterred, they utilized an ingenious contraption. They created a small glass case that held a coin. This was attached to the envelope and then was mailed out and delivered. What are available to collectors aren't as extremely precious as one would conjecture. These items are a curiosity at best and are a great conversational piece. If you're interested in an investment stand point, look no further than actual Confederate stamps. These stamps printed by the Confederate government depicts confederate presidents and can demand a tremendous premium. Some are so rare especially in good to mint condition that they can be found and purchased for no less than $30,000.00. This is for a thumbnail size piece of fragile paper! Or try the 1930's series of airmail stamps. The infamous "Zepplin" stamps. The highest value Zepplin stamp had a face value of $2.60. What? Is that all? Well, not really. Take into consideration that the "Great Depression" had hit hard. No one could afford to purchase a $2.60 stamp. Currently a complete set of 3 Zeps in perfect mint condition not hinged can go for several thousand dollars. Find one on an actual envelope with cancellation? Now your having a serious conversation with the sellar as your looking to spend $5,000.00 to $10,000.00!

What is noteworthy is the depiction of sports on stamps. Matter of fact there are thousands of sports stamps from varied countries. Please take note, some countries print stamps to support the countries that are in dire need of funding. Stay clear of stamps from Sierra Leone and such. The stamps seem pricey and very attractive yet are valued to only young children and novice collectors. The sports card equivelant is retail Leaf Draft. Inexpensive and a complete 100 card set is book valued at $10.00. You get the picture. So my assumption is that Franklin mint will offer a '90's football card valued at $0.15 and pair it with a $0.15 stamp that depicts football and there you have it. A beautiful panel depicting the card and stamp with a wonderful description and historical data that pertains to your card and stamp that is offered to you for $19.99. Sign me up, my signature will read; "Mr. How many licks to get to the center of the Tootsie pop. One, two, crunch. Three licks to get to the center of the tootsie pop"!

    Your friend, Mr. Lollipop,

    Toshi

A tidbit. One of the many reasons for the high costs of zepp stamps is that they were printed for a short period of time. You see, the Germans needed Helium, but the only country that had that in large quantities was the US. This was due to the Versailles Treaty. So they used Hydrogen instead. We all know the fate of the Hindenburg?

President Paul Von Hindenburg and the Zepplin were a fascination to a group of starving young rock band artist in England during the '60's. When a recording studio technician heard this bands first cuts they mentioned that it sounded like the music flowed yet was heavy like a heavy led Zepplin. Hence the emergence of one of the greatest rock bands ever "Led Zepplin"!
