  • Black Friday

I've been involved with only three Black Fridays in my life. I did not go to a Black Friday for my own needs, but for the needs of my children and Mrs. Toshi. In reality, my daughter benefited from these excursions with a mass of people looking for the next great deal. I recall my last Black Friday in that I made one purchase. This was a battery operated cat toy. My son needs not to get involved in these hysterical sales as he is the manager at the Stow, Ohio Walmart. My daughter lives on her own now, I've been blessed that she now can make her way to the myriad of malls that are filled with sales.

Having a new freedom for Mrs. Toshi and I, the empty nest phase of our lives are calm and relaxing. The closest I got the next best thing of in the way of Black Friday actually occurred a week ago at the Dollar Store. The last thing I expected to find was a dedicated section of football cards. Of course each pack cost $1.00.

The first thing I noticed were 2013 Panini Prestige and 2013 Panini Rookies and Stars. These two products from Panini are sold at or around $2.00. The interesting item that got my attention was a 2012 Panini Americana Heroes and Legends and small bundles of cards randomly put together. For the first time ever, I picked these almost unknown products, and headed home to see what this was all about.

From the Prestige and R&S packs, the usual veteran and rookie cards were found. These were now doubles for me. Americana was an interesting prospect, everything from US Presidents, cultural icons, and athletes were on cardboard. The miscellaneous packs was a pleasant surprise. Besides the 1997 Fleer Ultra, I actually had in my hand two cards from the 1984 Topps brand. For a dollar a pack and without dealing with the insanity of Black Friday, the Dollar Store offered a history lesson and most important of all, a fun way to enjoy my hobby!

I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.
