  • My Carolina Panthers PC

So, I decided to start a PC for my favorite team...the Carolina Panthers. I want to focus on mostly autos and GU cards, but will also be tracking down older parallel cards because I want to find cards from early in team history, even of lesser players. Players I remember watching as a child. But, my plan is to avoid base.

It might seem odd that a west coast guy like myself (born, raised, and lived my whole life) would be a Carolina fan...but that's what happened. Let me explain that first. I was born in 1985 in Oregon and have lived my whole life in the state. West coast NFL football when I was a kid had it's highs and lows. The closest team was the Seahawks and they always seemed to be bad (at least that's how I remember it). The LA Rams and Chargers never interested me much. The LA Raiders were the bad guys and that left the SF 49ers as the good guys. They had Joe Montana, and I was instantly hooked. I was a huge Montana fan. Well, he got hurt and was replaced by Steve Young. When the 49ers traded Montana (probably a good call), I followed him to KC as a fan and swore off the 49ers. After two years in KC, he retired and I had nobody left to cheer for.

Fortunately for me, a new team was on the horizon. The Carolina Panthers would start their inaugural season the very next year. I realized I really liked their logo and colors (that's important to a 10 year old) and they even drafted a player I had followed in college with their first ever pick (Kerry Collins). I watched their first preseason game on national TV (Hall of Fame Game vs. Jacksonville) and I was hooked. As time went on, they seemed to constantly have former Oregon Ducks on their roster (my home town team and later my alma mater) so they have been a good fit for nearly 20 years.

A couple years ago, I returned to this hobby and I haven't really focused on Carolina cards. Well, it is time that changes. I am starting a new team PC. Most of my initial cards are cards that I have had (as you will see, mostly Kerry Collins but again he was my first favorite Panther). But, a few more are already on the way (with players other than Collins). For now, here is the start.

Please let me know what you think.

Very nice start, and a great story! You should be happy now that Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers are making their way up the NFL ranks!

I definitely like the cards that depicts the team logo and introduces the new upstart team.

    Toshi
I am easy, I collect any and all NFL cards. Individual players I really enjoy are Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Matt Ryan, Andrew Luck, RGIII, and Russell Wilson. My passion is Favre rookie cards and vintage cards.

Good stuff! I'm also a child of the 90s and LOVE the parallels and new card technology that flooded the hobby during the mid-late 90s. I'll keep my eyes open when sifting through the cards at the shop I go to in Dallas for 90s Panthers Parallels. I have a few JSY and Autos of newer players in my bucket if you have any Cowboys cards... especially Michael Irvin.

              -BUCKET----ROOKIES TRADE LIST----WANT LIST----SET NEEDS----IRVIN HAVES LIST-
LOOKING FOR ANY MICHAEL IRVIN CARDS I DON'T HAVE AND OTHER COWBOYS AUTO/GU/RC'S

I'm going through my stuff right now...if I find anything I will let you know. Since you are a fan of the 90s parallels, I should mention my big long term project as you might find it interesting. As a child, my friends and I would buy 94 UD Collector's Choice packs and trade them (that's the set those logos are from). Those golds were about 1 per box so they were really special when we came across one. By big project that brought me back to this hobby was to try and do a complete gold set...all 384 cards. It's been a real challenge being that it is nearly 20 years old and set was never overly popular. I think I'm about 72 short of finishing right now.

I have cards of Jim Harbaugh as a Colts. I did not realize he also played for Carolina. Now he's the Coach for the 49'ers. What a great career, a true leader!

He has had an awesome career...both as a player and as a coach. He played for the Panthers in 2001...but he never saw the field during the regular season. He must have gotten some pre-season time or something because that photo on the card was taken somewhere. Based on what I have read, he dressed for a handful of games during their 1-15 2001 season, but never plated a down. He retired after the season.

The jersey on the card actually came from a 2000 game when he played for San Diego. This is the only example I have ever seen that is white. The others I have seen are dark blue pieces...that old Chargers blue. I like the white piece because without knowing better (ie, reading the back of the card), you would never know it's not a piece of Panther's jersey.
