What is your holy grail?

I've been collecting Cowboys for a long time. When I started collecting we didn't have ebay, you had the guy down street that collected as a kid, your friends, and a hopefully a local shop. My first holy grail was a Tony Dorsett Rookie. I remember buying it on vacation for $2 when I was 10. Next I went after a Staubach Rookie. 1963 topps Bob Lilly and 1962 Don Meredith were next. Now I'm looking for a 2003 Tony Romo Playoff Contenders.

What do you guys consider your holy grail now?

For a while, it was getting a Mike Schmidt rookie card, but I was able to score one for a great price at a flea market last year.

I'd have to think what my new holy grail would be...

I am 46 years old, retired due to an injury, and have utilized the collecting and acquiring of football cards to help me with cognition. I so enjoy this hobby and the many genres available for collectors young and old. Mrs. Toshi says I'm of the latter and added that stupid would be appropriate. LOL! As long as she keeps buying my football cards, she can call me anything she wants to. LOL!

I started my collecting prowess in 2012 of December, I am still but a novice compared to the many veteran collecting forum members here. I know nothing but of eBay and online purchases of hobby boxes with the occasional LCS from time to time. I did get to go to the Nationals here where I reside in of Cleveland, Ohio. I can imagine the time and patience it took for collectors in amassing sports cards 20 to 30 years ago, if not even as recently of the last decade.

Having been a recent forum member of myself, I would first like to take the time out and welcome you to CBC/CCW! I've learned so much and have met so many pure collectors with hearts of gold, ever giving, ever helping. Humanity would learn much from the members at CCW.

Now on to my own "Holy Grail" of my collection, it is a modest and very new/young set but I'm very proud of it. As you requested, here is my "Holy Grail" of cards.


I just pulled this out of a special edition Nationals 2007 hobby box that contained only two cards of which both would be a 1/1. You just didn't know what to expect at $56.00. But I took my chances.

The RGIII was a trade from CCW, I pulled the Luck from an Absolute hobby box that my daughter chose for me at the 2014 Nationals.

Mrs. Toshi is my collecting partner, she pulled the Wilson out of a hobby box of TC. The rest of the collection are cards that she pulled or had input into the purchase negotiations.

There were two boxes of 2012 Panini Black, one box was open, the other still had it's factory wrap on it. I would have chosen the unopened hobby box, but Mrs. Toshi not only chose the opened box (The cards were still factory wrapped) but pulled this diamond. Not only is this our first high end hit, it is our all time favorite card in our entire collection as it holds not only a financial value but has great sentimental value as well.

Here's my cheap little display case I have for them so far... the empty cases from top left: Don Meredith RC, Bob Lilly RC, Mel Renfro RC, Bob Hayes RC, Chuck Howley RC, Randy White RC.

Toshi, now you have me curious. By "Holy Grail", I mean card you don't have that you would most want to add to your collection. Like I said, mine is the 2003 Tony Romo. I once had a trade set up for one, but the other guy backed out on me.

Good question. As I was putting labels on the cases and putting them in the slot by year I had to choose some of the most prolific Cowboys and my personal favorites. As I grew up watching The Boys with my Dad he would tell me stories about how the early players played. The only guy he didn't really talk about was Harvey so I honestly don't know much about him. He could take Moose's spot or maybe Larry Allen's but Larry was the most dominant lineman we ever had and Moose is one of my favorite players. Not just cuz he's a Cowboy and opened many of holes for Emmitt but also because I met him on several occasions and he's been a true gentleman every time. I waited on him and his family once at a restaurant in Dallas and they are as nice as can be too.

Thanks buddy. The picture may be a bit deceiving... lol. The display case you can pick up at The Container Store. Not sure how much they are, but not nearly what you think. Maybe $20. The reason it looks so nice in the picture is because the only place I could really put it was on my desk. The lights are a simple LED lamp I picked up at Wal-Mart for about $10 and it is just pictured in a way that it looks like museum quality. I don't have the cases on my wall because honestly I don't trust the quality of the framing and if it fell some of my favorite cards would be destroyed. Eventually I plan on building a wooden case to display my favorite cards but for now they are on my desk as well... getting a bit cramped!

Now to the question here, I must adamantly admit, that the 1991 Wild Card 1000 Point Rookie Card of Brett Favre would be the key card.

I got it from Gridiron Authentics so it's still debatable if it's actually his. I see signatures of his from time to time that tell me it is his but the track record of the company makes me think otherwise. One day I'll send it to PSA and have them take a look...

awesome, I have dez, novacek, dorsett, lilly & staubach helmets. GAI seems to be split. The staubach is through them but it matches up to autos I have of him.

yeah, the guy has seriously overpriced that dez. i'd never pay close to 50 grand for it but i'd love to have it
