To my fellow forum members,
I was recently sent to a day care facility called MENTIS, it's a place for people with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). At first not only did I refuse to go, I told everyone one that I would runaway. Sometime later, I realized that it was the people that I loved most that wanted me to get better. Once at this facility, I saw for the first time in my life how lucky I was to be able to go through this injury with minimal issues to my brain injury.
Many here at MENTIS suffered from a stroke related brain injury of which I had no idea that a stroke could cause this much mayhem, (To put it ever so slightly), I felt blessed to be in a situation like mines. Don't get me wrong, on the one hand, if I had a choice, there would not be a work related accident in any form nor way. On the other hand, I have become an ardent fan of all things football cards. Here on CCW, I've met some of the most giving and most self sacrificing individuals ever. This was one of the many blessings for me.
I currently have short term memory issues, forget what I'm currently doing, the inability to have steady hands, and a complete lack of minimal function on my right side. With just these issues at hand, I'm not allowed in the kitchen as I drop things all the time; ie: glass ware and kitchen knives. But I always try to be careful in that area of serious possible injury to myself and other loved ones as well.
Having to get to meet eveyone and complete trades here on CCW has been a pleasure as well as a new chapter in my life, yet I was encouraged to do more. The therapists felt that I can add more to my plate. My issue, what else can I do that I had such a passion for? I reached out all the way back, to some 40 years ago. Making model kits, to be more accurate, to build fighter aircraft from WWII. This would be a great therapy for me, it'll excersice steady hands, to be more patient with things to come, and the ability to read and follow directions from a build kit manual. You should all see my dinning table, it's strewn with football cards at one end, and model kits at the other end.
To start with, I wanted to build my favorite WWII aircraft of all time; "1944 Chance Vought F4U-1A Corsair" fighter plane. This ominous aircraft had been given the name; "The Whistling Death" by the Japanese counterparts. This sound during a dive was created by the "Gullwing" bent design on the Corsair. It was also the longest production aircraft in the historical annuals of US fighter planes, YES! It was that bad ass, all the way into the jet age. More importantly, it was depicted in a TV show based on a real life person and squadron. Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington CO of the infamous "Black Sheep Squadron" VMF 214. They rained hell on the Japanese air force and had a reputation of as such. Amoung "Pappy's" many exploits, he also flew for the American volunteer group in China for Chiang Kai sheck's Air Force infamously known as the "Flying Tigers". Another one of my favorite aircraft, the P-40 Warhawk.
I started with a easy low end model company that is much more known for it's paints and model building paraphenilia known as "Testors". This kit was purchased for me by MENTIS for my thereputic issues. I became this 10 year old boy once again anxious to build my next fighter aircraft, but before I go any further, below here, depicted is my final exploits with my Corsair model kit.
Mrs. Toshi and I recently purchased my next model kit venture, a P-61 "Black Widow" night time fighter, twin engine, attack air craft once produced by Monogram and now eclusively made by Revel. Currently, instead of jumping straight into building the "Black Widow", I pateintly am pre-planning my build process. Acquiring everything needed for a successful build. This time around, I'll do a step by step built, everything from pre-build to built and post build. For now, here is my final product after retiring from model kits since 1976! Wow, I didn't realize how long ago that was!
