  • The Evolution to a P-61 Black Widow

    To my fellow forum members,

As promised, I have posted for my enjoyment as well as yours, the build of a 1/48th scale P-61 Black Widow. I've made this exact scale model three times during my youth. That's how much I enjoyed building this particular kit. Every build was a stock build, with no after market parts. That was 40 years ago! This very scale model is now a famous legendary kit distributed by Revell. It was a Monogram product until these two companies merged like most industries these days.

Currently, from what I have read and researched, this is the third incarnation of this very model kit. It is now not in production, due to its popularity, I'm not surprised that Revell would re-release this aircraft kit to be built by my grandson. To think that 40 years ago this was an introductory product release, not something that would be this popular. They're several aircraft models that I fondley remember building that are not in production, in order to build these kits that are now not in Revells inventory. All one needs to do is go where? EBAY!!!! Just like my most beloved football cards, you can find everything on eBay! This includes scale models that are not in production anymore.

There are several other companies producing Black Widow models but, there are all in the 1/32nd scale. These come from Great Wall, Eduardo, and a few more that slipped my memory. These are high end kits built with extremely well details. If you want a 1/48th scale Black widow, your only choice will be Revell. I thought that this kit was going to be inexpensive. Ya Right! In the 1970's, I fondly remember saving my chore monies and purchasing this kit with the help of my father at $10.00. It now goes for $38.00. The 1/32nd scale kits that I mentioned above go for around $50.00 up to $120.00. What? $120.00 for a f#%^ing plastic model kit?

This time around, I was going to follow what the Pro-model builders do, utilizing after-market parts for extra fine detail. With this in mind, I also needed tools and supplies to build this aircraft. It's like any hobby, you can't collect nor build something without the proper tools for the proper task at hand. I need not remind sports card collectors the paraphenilia needed to collect sports cards and the cost that's attached to our beloved cardboard. Like my football cards that I just started collecting in 2012, I needed to start from the very beginning. The cost has gone way past my budget and I still need more supplies.

All of this cost will be offset by my next model build as I will already have the appropriate tools needed. In this thread, I will go into detail on every single aspect of this build from start to finish, just like my complete sets, as a good example, this would be in my thread in regards to the 2012 Panini Elite Hard Hats Complete Set. Please browse and comment or ask questions on this particular project. Just a FYI, the average pro-modeler that builds detail P-61's from Revell take up to 6 months and can go past the one year mark. I've never done anything like this in my life and I'm a bit scared but I'll do my best in it's completion. Thank you for your support in this thread.

    As always, humbly yours,
    Toshi

The Dollar bill was added to give forum members an idea of what a 1/48th Scale Model would look like.

My research documentation on the P-61

I needed a reference to be able to build my P-61. 40 years ago, I would have to go to the library just to get a book on WWII Aircraft. In this modern day and age, it took me a few seconds to pull up these schematic renditions needed to have a visual aspect on this aircraft. Please note that this fighter did not get into battle until at almost the end of the war. Hence there is not much documentation on the P-61 like you can find on let's say a P-51 Mustang, F4U Corsair, F6F Hellcat, well you get my drift. These were pulled from the net and my all time favorite documentary YouTube.

        After Market Photo-Ecthed Brass Parts

This is the thing that scares me the most! As you can see, I've included a dime for scale reference in regards to the Photo-Etched parts. I'm not too confident that I can do this aspect of the build, I will and can only do my best. Wish me luck.

There is another after market Photo-Etched parts that is for the exterior of the P-61. I still need to order that, the tool to cut the brass parts, the annealing tool, and finally the Photo-Etch bending tool that runs at or around $100.00.

        <a href="http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/hayn0824/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03/2D79EFD3-DB60-490F-B5AF-DFA0243E78F5_zps5xdn1jdb.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/a538/hayn0824/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-03/2D79EFD3-DB60-490F-B5AF-DFA0243E78F5_zps5xdn1jdb.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 2D79EFD3-DB60-490F-B5AF-DFA0243E78F5_zps5xdn1jdb.jpg"/></a>

As you can see above, if you look closely, this kit is for the interior of the P-61. As I mentioned, there is a new kit out of which I just found out about yesterday for the Photo-Etch parts for the exterior of the P-61. I will also be purchasing after market decals, struts, landing gear (Of which will be made of metal), two detailed resin engines and cowlings, real rubber tires with the correct tread pattern, the correct 4 50 caliber machine guns that are top mounted in the turret, metal 40 millimeter cannons of which are 4 that are mounted at the belly of the P-61, and whatever else that I find in regards to the Revell 1/48th kit. I do have to be very diligent as there are several after market parts that are specifically made for the other companies that builds kits that are in the 1/32 scale. Whew, is that enough or what? Actually, there's more as you can see at the bottom of this running thread.

Tools, tools, and more tools! I still need more!!!

Here is just a sample of tools that I need to build this aircraft and any other aircraft in the near future. I wanted to purchase tools made by a Japanese company called Tamiya. This is the best quality tools that not only would I like or hope to have in this case but, pro-modelers the world over utilize religiously.

If I purchased these complete items, I would probably be in the exesses of a $2000.00 price range. This is out of my budget. It's equal to two Panini Imaculate hobby boxes and a mini case of 2012 Panini Black. One of the biggest expense is for a compressor that's needed to run an airbrush. I will be doing everything by hand and a spray can. At a specific time of the build, I will go out to hobby lobby and grab a cheap, inexpensive, beginners portable air brush for $40.00 and some change I hope. I say I hope because Mrs. Toshi would probably send me back to MENTIS permanatly! LOL!

The equipment you see below has been purchased at Harbor Frieght Tools, Walmart, and wherever I can find simple household hobby items that are inexpensive. So far my investment in tools has exceeded $300.00. I still cannot start my build as I need another $250.00 in tools and supplies to even get the cockpit started. Sadly, my allowance for football cards are now $0.00 + $0.00 = $0.00. I told Mrs. Toshi that I'll withhold any more card purchases for 6 months. This will actually will work in my favor, the collecting season is coming to its end as far as new products go, and we won't see any 2015 cards until SAGE/HIT comes out with players in their college uniforms. So until then, the majority of my posts will be on this thread. Again, please comment and or ask me any questions in regards to this P-61 build.

                  Toshi,

I have to say that is an awesome undertaking!

I will definitely be stopping by here to see progress.

I have had a number of friends do builds like this and you're right they are done in extensive detail and as you point out expensive as well.

But like you said the supplies and suppliers are definitely more abundant now - than they were even 15 years ago. I remember building plastic models as a kid and not even being able to find REAL model glue...I ended up trying to put one together with some weird adhesive that discolored the plastic...

The liquid adhesives now are way easier to control and apply with the brushes included in the bottles.

I remember friends ordering specialty parts in order to be able to do things like put bucket seats in custom car kits that came with bench-type seats...they would even create inspection stickers for the windshield and because they were models of muscle cars it wasn't considered "taboo" to put a package of cigarettes on the dash - custom made and correct in color and scale!!

Their biggest suggestion from them that I still follow when I get in a building mood is before starting to work on the kit - to wash the plastic parts with a mild dish soap (like a bit of Dawn) in lukewarm water...basically you just need to put about 1-2 inches of water in a dishpan or casserole dish add a couple drops of soap and swish the "racks" of parts in the soapy water - then do the same process with plain water to rinse them...they can be laid out on paper towel to dry... doing this before you cut the parts away from the racks or cages (I think the real term may be sprue) keeps them together so you can find them and the dishpan/dish strategy keeps them from getting away...

This is for getting the releasing agent off of the molded parts in the kit - it allows paint and glue to stick to the plastic better since the releasing agent has an oily residue...I can't speak to photo etched parts as I have no experience with them...

Yes, scale modeling has come a long way! You are spot on as to the pre-prep of the parts prior to assembly in the regards to a soap wash/bath. Thank you for stopping by!

I'm still awaiting my PE Photo Etch bending tool, I can't go any further than what you see here. For now, this is the front end of the cockpit. It depicts the pilot and gunner Fueselage area.

At this point, once the PE bending tool arrives, I'll be able to work on the radar mans Fueselage area. After completing that, the cockpit will be 50% complete. The next process is the addition of PE items that are on the left and right side of the cockpit that surrounds all three occupants. I also purchased thin wire and rods to duplicate the wiring within the cockpit. Let's hope that part comes out ok.

As I've never worked with PE before, I find the technical task very time consuming. As a reference, one chair took me 4 hours to build. I do find it challenging yet very fun to complete. What helps me a lot is the purchase of eye glasses from Walmart that are in the power of 3X's. Anymore and I'll go blind! Lol.
