Stan Musial turns 90 years old today. Earlier this week, President Obama announced that he will be awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Stan in a press release on November 17th. The Medal of Freedom is the highest honor a civilian can receive. I was reading through the press release which lists all of the other announced recipients, and it hit me that all of the others were world leaders, environmental advocates, civil rights pioneers, etc. Stan is some pretty good company. There have been several other baseball players that have received this same award in the past. Stan Musial will be joining the list of Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Buck O'Neil, Henry Aaron and Frank Robinson as other MLB players who have received the award. As a member of the "Stand for Stan" campaign, which was a coordinated effort to help convince the White House to give the award to Mr. Musial, I was ecstatic to hear the news. So congratulations and Happy Birthday to Stan Musial, my hero.
