  • Your Best starting nine.........

I thought this might be an interesting thing to do, so please post your BEST (in your opinion) Starting nine baseball team of players who ONLY PLAYED for ONE MLB TEAM their ENTIRE CAREER.

I'll get this started. My choices, of players who'd be my starters and only played for one team their entire career, would be ---

    1B - LOU GEHRIG - YANKEES
    2B - CHARLEY GEHRINGER - TIGERS
SS - CAL RIPKEN, JR - ORIOLES
    3B - BROOKS ROBINSON - ORIOLES
    C - JOHNNY BENCH - REDS
OF - TED WILLIAMS - RED SOX
OF - STAN MUSIAL - CARDINALS
OF - MICKEY MANTLE - YANKEES
    P - WALTER JOHNSON - SENATORS

So, who would be your starting nine of players who spent their entire MLB career on one team ?

    1B - Lou Gehrig - Yankees
    2B - Jackie Robinson - Dodgers
SS - Cal Ripken Jr - Orioles
3B - Mike Schmidt - Phillies (Bat puts him over Brooks IMO)
    C - Johnny Bench - Reds
OF - Ted Williams - Red Sox
OF - Roberto Clemente - Pirates (field, bat, off field - has to be on the team!)
OF - Mickey Mantle - Yankees
P - Walter Johnson - Senators (#1 pitcher of all time, regardless of how many teams players played for)

Brandon, very good choices. I even considered Mike Schmidt and Roberto Clemente, with Jackie Robinson as a more distant choice. I choose "Brooksie" over Mike because of his defense (16 gold gloves). Without a doubt though Schmidt was the best hitting third baseman in baseball history. With Musial and Clemente it was a harder decision. Without a doubt Clemente was definitely faster, but Musial's hitting stats put him on my team instead. Clemente and Schmidt would be my back-ups for 3b and OF. THANKS for posting your choices.

ac - n - mike - thanks for posting your choices. However, some DON'T QUALIFY. You posted a few that played for more than ONE team - three of your STARTERS - WILLIE MAYS,HANK AARON, & CHRISTY MAYHEWSON - and many RESERVES (ALL but JETER, 'BROOKSIE",SCHMIDT,MANTLE,CLEMENTE, & JOHNSON). So, who would you replace those three (MAYS,AARON, & MATHEWSON) with (remember - must have played the entire career with one team)?

Daqda - nice line-up. However, as good as some of those were, I'd personally have to use some as reserves. As much as I'm an ORIOLES fan, and PALMER is the BEST pitcher they EVER HAD, there is no way I'd pick him before Walter "BIG TRAIN" JOHNSON (over 400 wins and 100 shutouts, and the 1st to strikeout over 3500 batters) But arguably a very good line-up. THANKS for your post.

                              Here are my personal favorites:

                              C - Kurt Suzuki
                              1B - Lou Gehrig
                              2B - Jackie Robinson
                              SS - Cal Ripken Jr.
                              3B - Chipper Jones
                              LF - Ted Williams
                              CF - Kirby Puckett
                              RF - Tony Gwynn
                              LHP - Ron Guidry
                              RHP - Jim Palmer
                              RP - Brian Wilson
DH - Ichiro Suzuki (Hey... he's DH'd over 25 times in his career)

LOL... I can't believe I actually have two Yankees on this list... but Gehrig is a legend and I'll always remember him, by the way he was portrayed in Pride of the Yankees... which was as a man with strong "character". And Guidry was a beast from my childhood... I always used him in this baseball game I played back on my Apple IIe.
