Report -- Florida Marlins place closer Leo Nunez on MLB restricted list - ESPN

MIAMI -- Florida Marlins closer Leo Nunez has been playing under an assumed name, and the issue prompted him to return Thursday to his native Dominican Republic, two people familiar with his immigration status said.

Both people said the Marlins have been aware of the issue for several months. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because Dominican and team officials haven't made any public comment on the case.

One of the people said Nunez's real name is Juan Carlos Oviedo and he's 29, a year older than listed in the team media guide. The Marlins placed Nunez on Major League Baseball's restricted list, and he isn't expected to pitch in the final week of the season.

Cant blame the team that drafted him. He had a legal (although untrue) birth certificate. Did you guys happen to see the special on ESPN? This is rampid there. Teams are now scouting 12-14 year olds to hopefully get them on the radar before they get their birth certificates forged. All this so they can get a 4500.00 signing bonus instead of 2500.00. If Im a team with money, I go down there, pick 20 kids that show promise and sign them for next to nothing and then develope them myself and see which, if any pan out.

Yes, in most cases, they do it to make them younger. There was one guy (cant remember who but is still playing) did to make him older by two years I think. They're saying this guys getting deported because Florida isnt going to BAT for him. In other cases, the MLB team has "smoothed" things over and they were allowed to re-apply for a new visa.
