  • Indians trade for Derek Lowe

We have our first trade of the 2011-12 offseason!  The Indians acquired Derek Lowe from the Braves, tweets John Kreger. …

The Indians acquired Derek Lowe from the Braves, tweets John Kreger. We'll have more details as they become available, but I think it's safe to assume the Braves are paying a significant portion of Lowe's $15MM salary.

Lowe, 38, posted a 5.05 ERA, 6.6 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 0.67 HR/9, and 59% groundball rate in 187 innings this year for Atlanta. Lowe's Braves career ended on a sour note, as his 8.75 September ERA contributed to their collapse. Still, his groundball rate ranked second in all of baseball. Lowe signed a four-year, $60MM deal with the Braves in January of 2009.
    EDIT:
    Buster_ESPN

Atlanta is absorbing all but $5 million of the money owed to Derek Lowe in this; second-line player return going from CLE to ATL

ATL getting back a Class A left-hander in return for Lowe,so obviously their primary motivation was to clear some dollars, and rotation spot.
Lowe makes $15 mil next season.

Lowe should help the Indians. At only $5 million, that is a good deal. Plus he only has 1 more year left in his contract, so if it doesnt work out no big loss.

Ok last season his numbers were horrible. But the seasons before that he put up decent numbers.

He'll be 39 next season and had a 5 ERA in the NL, you can probably add .5 to his ERA so it'd be 5.5 in the AL. They would've been better off getting Brad Penny
