    Red Sox sign Kelly Shoppach; Trade for Mark Melancon

    The Red Sox have agreed to sign Kelly Shoppach to a one-year, $1.35MM deal, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (on Twitter). The deal will be announced today, Crasnick reports.

    The Red Sox acquired reliever Mark Melancon from the Astros for shortstop Jed Lowrie and starter Kyle Weiland, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. ESPN's Jerry Crasnick first tweeted that Weiland was traded in a deal that involved a reliever going to Boston.

    Shoppach will be the backup catcher. Astros got a nice deal for Melancon.

      Shoppach is a quality back up. Great catcher to put in their twice a week if needed.

        Wouldn't think so. Scutaro at shortstop and Youkilis at 3rd base i'd imagine.
