Last weekend, I took my kids (son 10, son 7, daughter 5) down to Melbourne to watch the Nationals practice for three days. What a great experience. Each day, it seemed something priceless and memorable happened. Here are a few of the highlights:
1.) The first day, my sons and I were watching them practice - it was a bit on the chilly side. There was this beautiful Golden Retriever. My kids were petting it, playing with it and pretty soon, the dog was snuggling up in our lap. I had noticed that the owner had put a "Ramos" jersey on the dog. After about an hour, I asked, the woman, "What is your connection with Ramos - is he your favorite player?" She said, "It is my son and your kids have been playing with his dog". How cool!
2.) Day 2, Adam Laroache has his 10 year old son dressed in his uniform shagging fly balls. We were on the opposite side of the fence and started talking with him. We were asking him what positions he plays and so on. After they were done, Adam Laroache threw a ball over the fence for my 10 year old. Later in the day, we were talking with his son again, and asked him if he and his dad would sign the baseball. They did and his son thought that was really cool. Now we have a baseball signed by Adam LaRoache and his 10 year old son.
3.) Day 3, my son really wanted Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth to sign his hat. We found their "secret getaway". While we were waiting, Rick Ankiel came by signed autographs and gave my son his broken bat and autographed it for him. Priceless!!!
All in all 3 days of watching the majors and Top 40 prospects. My son collected about 80 autographs on cards, about 30 on his hat, and many more on balls. My 7 year old collected about 50 autos on his hat and about 25 on a ball. Even my 5 year old daughter went one day and collected about 25 autos on her hat. My wife is a photographer and took pictures.
To add on top of that - it is FREE to attend practice!! How much better can a vacation get!!!!
