  • Michael Pineda Headed to the DL

New York Yankees' Michael Pineda has shoulder tendinitis, to start on DL - ESPN New York

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- An MRI of Michael Pineda's sore right shoulder showed no structural damage, just tendinitis, a development Yankees manager Joe Girardi termed "great news."

Still, the 23-year-old right-hander, acquired from Seattle in January in the trade for Jesus Montero, will begin his first Yankees season on the disabled list, and the date of his first start remains undetermined.

Pineda underwent treatment, including icing, at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa after an MRI exam on Saturday. The right-hander doesn't know when he'll resume playing catch.

Ouch! I'm a little concerned about Pineda in New York, to begin with. Hopefully, he isn't out too long.

Well looks like the Yankees shot themselves in the foot with that trade.

Blessing in disguise. The Yankees still have six pitchers(including Pettite), plus a stable of promising young pitchers at Triple-A. Pineda still needs to round into both physical and playing shape. He will surely log some minor league rehab innings, which will help build up his arm strength even more. The Yankees are not forced to rush him at all. He does need a mentor when it comes to the New York media, but I am sure that won't be an issue for Yankees or Pineda to overcome.
