Reds Agree To Extend Joey Votto: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols won't be the only first basemen to cash in with historic contracts this offseason. Joey Votto and the Reds have agreed to a ten-year, $225MM contract extension according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The deal includes full no-trade protection. Dan Lozano of Icon Sports Group represents Votto.

The ten-year deal will keep Votto in Cincinnati through 2023 according to Nightengale, indicating that it's ten years on top of the two years left on his current deal. Votto signed a three-year, $38MM extension prior to last season. With the new extension, he is now under contract for the next 12 years at a total price of $251.5MM.

WOW. He's going to be with the Reds till he's 40. That won't end well.

Geez another huge contract. The Rangers and A-Rod ruined all future contracts for MLB owners. LOL!

I would love to see baseball in 5 years when all of these 10 year deals are half way done.

Colin Cowherd made an interesting remark on his show today. "The Yankees and Red Sox can afford to have bad contracts like AJ Burnett, Kyle Farnsworth, and Javier Vasquez. The Yes network helps off set those bad contracts. For a team like Cincinnati or San Diego, a bad contract ties the hands of your franchise for years."
Favorite baseball players include: Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Kirby Puckett, Pete Rose, Tyler Colvin Mark Appel
Favorite football players include: Peyton Manning, John Elway, Daunte Culpepper, Mike Alstott, Blake Bortles, and Dri Archer
Collecting: 2012 Topps Mini 1987 topps... non-certified autos (in person or through the mail), autographed cards with bible verses

This is 100% correct. It sounds like the Votto deal is backloaded, so in his worst years they'll pay him the most. Just not a smart deal in my opinion.

I'm surprised that the Reds did this.

I'm not surprised the Reds did this. They are basically in a no win situation. If they don't lock up their best player, what does that say to the fans. If they gave him a 10 year deal in two years when his contract is up, they would be paying him until he was 42! At least now, they hopefully will get a chunk of his "good years" left. The days of players having great years in their late 30's like Bonds and McGwire are LONG GONE!

                New specifics coming in.

Reds' Votto agrees to $251.5M, 12-year contract - MLB - Yahoo! Sports

Joey Votto got a big payday by staying in a small market, agreeing to a $251.5 million, 12-year deal with the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday that is the longest guaranteed contract in major league history. The agreement adds $225 million over 10 years to his previous contract. The deal includes a club option for 2024, when the 2010 National League MVP turns 41.

Part of the reason for that is because players are starting their careers at a later age than they did 10-20 years ago
