Tigers Lose in Extra Innings 3-2
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Texas Rangers today in extra innings 3-2.
Drew Smyly pitched very well in his 3rd career start going 6 innings, giving up only 1 run and striking out 7. Octavio Dotel came in to pitch the 7th inning, Joaquin Benoit started the 8th inning and got 1 out, before walking Elvis Andrus. Phil Coke was brought into the game, but a steal by Elvis Andrus and a throwing error by Alex Avila followed by a sacrifice fly by Josh Hamilton tied the game at 2; Coke pitched a scoreless 9th inning as well. Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless 10th inning.
Thad Weber made his major league debut in the 11th inning and was bad. He walked the first batter, then gave up base hits to the next two batters. After that squeeze play which hit of the knee of Alberto Gonzalez was ruled a fair ball, instead of a foul ball which it was to give the Rangers the lead.
The Tigers scoring started in the 3rd inning with Ramon Santiago hitting a leadoff triple. It looked like he was gonna be stranded on 3rd base to end the inning, however Colby Lewis threw a wild pitch that Santiago scored on.
Brennan Boesch broke a 1-1 tie in the 6th inning though with a solo home run; that was is his 2nd home run on the year, which ended up being the winning run.
The Tigers have an off day tommorow, and will open a 3 game series Tuesday night as Max Scherzer takes the mound against Jason Vargas of the Seattle Mariners.
