  • Houston Astros Select Carlos Correa With First Pick

Carlos Correa drafted first by Astros | Big League Stew - Yahoo! Sports

In a relatively surprising move, the Houston Astros selected Carlos Correa with the first pick of Major League Baseball's amateur draft on Monday night.

The 17-year-old shortstop out of Puerto Rico Baseball Academy was ranked near the top of many draft boards, but most pundits had Houston GM Jeff Luhnow going with Stanford pitcher Mark Appel or Georgia high school outfielder Byron Buxton. Correa is the first player born in Puerto Rico to be drafted first overall.

"We really felt like Carlos has the chance to be an impact player in Houston for a very long time," Luhnow said on MLB Network after the pick. "Getting a young player like this who could turn into a superstar was really our main priority."

At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Correa has drawn some tantalizing comparisons to a young Alex Rodriguez. He's even slated to attend the University of Miami, which is where Alex Rodriguez was headed before being drafted first overall by the Seattle Mariners in 1993.

Quite the suprise by the Astros.

I feel like Appel might not end up signing a contract with the Pirates. The new draft pay scale is gonna have a lot of potential stars not sign deals because of this and they may choose to play other sports.

I read an article saying the Astros passed on drafting Derek Jeter in 1992 for Phil Nevin with their first pick because of concerns with money (bonus signing). Maybe this time they got it right by selecting a SS.

With the Astros moving to the AL, I think it was a dumb move to not take Appel. They're in desperate need of good pitchers. It's all about money now. Correa was probably a cheaper signing bonus.
