Dodgers To Extend Andre Ethier: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

The Dodgers have reached an agreement on a five-year, $85MM extension with Andre Ethier according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale (on Twitter). Jon Heyman of CBS Sports was the first to report that the two sides were near the extension, and added that the contract contains a sixth year vesting option.

Less than I thought he'd get, but personally don't see this contract being that great for the Dodgers.

I like Ethier. He's not great, but he's a pretty nice player.

Andre Ethier Agrees to 5-Year Extension

Last night, Jon Heyman reported that the Dodgers and Andre Ethier had agreed to a 5-year, $85 million contract extension. An announcement is schedule for today so nothing is official just yet.

      The deal also includes a vesting sixth-year option. Here's the year-by-year breakdown: - 2013: $13.5 million - 2014: $15.5 million - 2015: $18 million - 2016: $18 million - 2017: $17.5 million - 2018: $17.5 million ($2.5 million buyout).
That's a lot of money towards the end of his contract, but like Jay Jaffe tweeted a couple hours ago:
I like Ethier contract a whole lot more when I compare it to Jayson Werth's deal. Fewer years, younger age, less $, longer track record.
Ethier currently leads the NL in RBI's with 52. I noticed during this season that Ethier has been hustling and running out every ball he hits. He's been doing a lot more since it was his contract year. Frank McCourt was the main reason Ethier didn't want to stay in LA, but I don't blame him. Now that McCourt is gone and there's new ownership, why would anyone want to leave? Maybe the Dodgers can try to trade for Dustin Pedroia, who happens to be Andre Ethier's best friend.

It's the third largest contract in Dodgers history behind Matt Kemp and Kevin Brown. It's great seeing the new owners locking up our big hitters and now it's time for them to lock up Clayton Kershaw.

He got in line with what Adam Jones got I think?

Ethier wasn't worth what he got paid, but Dodgers really didn't have a choice because he was going to Red Sox in the offseason if he wasn't signed. Not a dodgers fan so I like the deal in that it saddles them with big money during Ethier's final seasons, which may or not come back to hurt them.
