Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, & Justin Verlander Named to the All-Star Team

Today the 2012 MLB All-Stars were announced, and the Detroit Tigers will be sending 3 players to the All-Star game in Kansas City this year. Those players will be Prince Fielder, Justin Verlander, and Miguel Cabrera.

Prince Fielder will be the starting first basemen for the AL. In 78 games Fielder is hitting .294 with 12 home runs, 52 RBI, 42 runs scored and has a .371 on-base percentage. This is the 4th all-star selection for Fielder and his first selection as a Tiger.

Justin Verlander has a great chance to be the starting pitcher for the AL. In 17 games started Verlander is 8-5 with a 2.69 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. Verlander leads the AL in innings pitched, strikeouts, and complete games. This is 5th all-star selection for Verlander.

Miguel Cabrera was selected as a reserve at 3rd base. In 78 games Cabrera is hitting .315 with 16 home runs, 62 RBI, 45 runs scored and has a .376 on-base percentage. This is Cabrera's 7th all-star selection and 3rd selection as a Tiger. It's also his first selection at 3rd base since 2007.

The All-Star game takes place July 10th at 8PM EST on Fox.

          .276 AVG/.337 OBP/11 HR/47 RBI/47 R/20 SB

          or

          .276 AVG/.336 OBP/9 HR/40 RBI/60 R/15 SB

Good call by Ron Washington. Player B clearly deserved to be there over player A because he has teammates that score him more frequently.

I think Kinsler was actually a players pick, but Andrus, Harrison and Nathan were all manger picks. Do we really need 3 shortstops and 5 closers?

To me it makes more sense to have a good # of relief pitchers than eight starters. Why in the world do both teams need EIGHT starting pitchers ? Out of those 16 starters, how many will start ? Just two !!! It would make more sense to have about 3 or 4 starters per team, since they don't have many (if any) long relievers. Five closers, since they are used to pitching usually about 1 inning a game, make more sense than the eight starters.

I thought the same thing when I saw the AL had 3 DH, but then again, the other 2 would just be pinch hitters anyways!

Yeah, 3 DH's makes more sense than the eight starters because they are used to coming off the bench (and not playing in the field) to just hit.

Just like most years, probably about 4 starters per each league wont even play at all because they pitched a few days beforehand.

One thing to applaud Tony La Russa on is he didn't favor his own players, as he didn't pick any of them with his manager's selections. Putting Freese on the 30 man vote really is insignificant as either Harper or Chipper is going to take it.

Washington only picked Matt Harrison, Joe Nathan, and Elvis Andrus with his manager's picks so not too much blame can be put on him either.

I just find it funny how the backup 1st basemen for the NL is a guy who platoons and has played terrible of late over someone like Paul Goldschmidt who had better all around numbers and would have been fun to watch in the HR derby.

I just read the rosters closely for the first time.

I cant believe the fans voted for Mike Napoli, Pablo Sandoval, Rafael Furcal, Carlos Beltran, and Melky Cabrera to start over Matt Wieters/Joe Mauer, David Wright, Ryan Braun/Mike Stanton/Carlos Gonzales, and Starlin Castro.

And who is Ryan Cook? LOL!

Ryan cook was the throw in from the Trevor Cahill deal. He's a one year wonder and by next year he'll be just a run of the mill type guy. nothing special about him.

Nice to see a good guy like Bryan LaHair make the team..I know he has been slumping lately but he got off to a great start and still has very good numbers compared to other NL 1B....

Chipper vs. Bryce..wonder who will get it..

Most people will prob go Chipper, but I am not a big fan of his..so i'm going Bryce..

                              2012 MLB All-Star Rosters Announced

MLB announced the rosters for the 83rd Midsummer Classic that will be taking place on July 10th in Kansas City, Missouri.

A total of 6 players will be representing Los Angeles in the All-Star game. Two from the Dodgers and four from the Angels. The Angels have a chance for another player to be voted in by the fans, but it's very unlikely since he's not a popular guy. The final vote is usually a popularity contest.

Matt Kemp will participate in the Home Run Derby, but announced that he won't be playing in the All-Star game because of his hamstring. He wants to be healthy for the second half of the season.

Mike Trout will become the seventh youngest to ever play in an All-Star game.

Here's a look at the entire roster:

                              AL starters

Fans have an opportunity to select the last roster spot by voting online for one of the five players selected by each team's manager. I'm going to predict that Yu Darvish & Bryce Harper will be voted in by the fans.

                              Your AL final vote ballot:
                              • Yu Darvish, Rangers
                              • Jonathan Broxton, Royals
                              • Ernesto Frieri, Angels
                              • Jason Hammel, Orioles
                              • Jake Peavy, White Sox
                              Your NL final ballot:
                              • Bryce Harper, Nationals
