  • Drew Smyly Strikes Out a Career High 10 Batters in a 4-2 Tigers Win

The Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals tonight 4-2.

The Tigers got going in the 3rd inning after singles by Ramon Santiago and Austin Jackson, then Quintin Berry hit a triple to drive in both runners and it gave the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

Drew Smyly gave up 2 runs in the 5th to make it a 2-2 game after 5 innings.

Ryan Raburn and Delmon Young had a couple of awful defensive plays in the 6th inning, but lucky for them, it didn't cost the Tigers a run. Nice job to let them play at positions they're terrible at, Jim.

Smyly was done after 6 innings tonight. He gave up 2 runs on 6 hits, and had a career high 10 strikeouts; he earned his 4th win of the season.

Delmon Young did make up for it though in the bottom of the 6th inning when he hit a 2-run home run after Prince Fielder had reached base with a single; it's Young's 8th home run of the season.

Brayan Villarreal got the first 2 outs of the 7th inning, and Phil Coke got the final out of the inning.

Joaquin Benoit came in and pitched a scoreless 8th inning.

Jose Valverde pitched a 1-2-3 9th inning and earned his 16th save of the season.

Doug Fister (1-6 4.61 ERA) starts for the Tigers tommorrow and takes on Bruce Chen (7-7 4.83 ERA) of the Royals.
