Phillies Close To Extension With Cole Hamels: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

The Phillies have agreed to sign Cole Hamels to a six-year contract extension worth a little more than $140MM, ESPN.com's Buster Olney reports (on Twitter). The deal, which is pending a physical, will be the second-largest contract ever for a pitcher, trailing only C.C. Sabathia's seven-year, $161MM contract.

Best of luck to the Phillies on trying to figure out how to get under the luxury tax cap now.

It's really dumb to have 3 starting pitchers making over $20 million per season. You're right, no way they get under the luxury tax now. Oh well, more money for the Marlins to squander away.

I'd prefer to have flexibility, but I guess having Hamels around ain't too bad either.
