What exactly was that little spot on Tommy Hunter's hat late Tuesday night? Gum? Nope. Manna from the sky? Now we're getting closer.
While Hunter was warming in the bullpen at Safeco Field during the Orioles' insane 18-inning win over the Mariners, a seagull dropped some droppings onto his head.
Let's hear it from Hunter's perspective:
"I was minding my own business, not doing anything,” Hunter said. “I thought it was [Luis] Ayala throwing stuff at me. You know, he usually does. So I didn’t know what it was. I just thought someone threw a piece of gum and hit me. It wasn’t a piece of gum, man. Everybody just started dying laughing. Then everybody said it was good luck. Then we won."
So why didn’t the right-hander just go find another hat?
“It’s my favorite hat,” he said. “I have 7 5/8’s. I got a huge dome. A large landing zone, I guess.”
Embarrassing? Sure. It could have been a lot worse though. At least he was wearing a hat.
