10 years for a catcher no matter how good, is a problem in the making, he'll get to beaten up and his offensive numbers will go down within 6-7 years...
Did Piazza's numbers ever go down at the age of 31? So why would Mauer's numbers go down? He puts up crazy numbers as it is so if he gets beat up and starts to hit a more normal .280 with 15 HR ad 80 RBI that's still a very good hitting catcher

Piazza's contract didnt start at the age of 26-27 (like Mauers would) i believe and didnt run from that time for 10 years (i think), which means the deal is up at 36-37, i'm sorry but i can't see any catcher being worth the money at that age he'll get, i'd assume he'll get between 15-25 per season on average...
Also lets remember, baseball players for the most part have contracts that are guarnteed, if something for some reason happens to Mauer, they locked up most there money in him for a 10 year period
Good this means he wont be going to the Yankees anytime soon.
According to the Yankees, they couldnt get him regardless, they told Damon they couldnt resign him because they had no money left, i know its a bad excuse but its funny
Yes, but he will bring in 10x that amount.. They're not just paying him for his playing ability, ut rather for the image he has on the town and the team.. He's a hometown hero who the fans absolutely adore.. He is a genuinely nice guys if you have read the new ESPN article on him.. They are just opening a new park and having him and Morneau will keep people coming.. Minnesota fan will continue to come to see him play.. He is more than likely a future HOFer if he keeps it up for another 5 or 6 years.. And when Morneau's contract is over, the Twins then have the option of moving Mauer to 1st base if he does break down..

This is just my opinion but,
Not saying he isnt a nice guy, but if he were to go sour for whatever reason, being nice won't help win games..
Also i don't think they'll have money for BOTH Mauer/Morneau, if they lock both them up, they'll have not much money left to spend on any other position i'd assume the way they pay players..
Off topic, but i'd disagree on the HOF, he needs more than that, he needs solid power numbers, RBI/Run totals, and has to keep a high batting average, but thats a debate for many years down the road

I hope you know that the American League has this thing called DH....
I doubt Mauer will be catching towards the end of his career, if they find a younger guy who can take over defensively

Of course, but even the great catchers like Piazza/Pudge Rodriguez broke down at the end of there careers,
I'm just saying I think they're investing to much money into the deal, give him a 5 year deal with some sort of incentives where if he meats those, theres another 5 year deal that gets kicked into place
