  • Red Sox To Hire John Farrell As Manager

AP source: Red Sox to hire Farrell as manager - Yahoo! Sports

BoSox finally have a real manager now.

BOSTON (AP) -- A baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations says the Boston Red Sox are preparing to announce that John Farrell will be their new manager.

The announcement is being held up by the unusual logistics of hiring a manager under contract with another team, the official said on the condition of anonymity because the final procedural steps had not been cleared. But the official said multiyear deal had been agreed to and could be announced Sunday.

Farrell had one year remaining on his contract with Toronto, where he went 154-170 over the past two seasons. The Red Sox have agreed to send the Blue Jays compensation for letting him leave.

Comcast SportsNet New England was first to report the deal.

Blue Jays trade manager John Farrell to Red Sox - Yahoo! Sports

BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox have hired John Farrell to be their new manager.

The Red Sox obtained the rights to their former pitching coach by trading infielder Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays. Farrell had been the Toronto manager the past two seasons, posting a 154-170 record with two fourth-place finishes.

Boston wanted Farrell a year ago, when the ballclub let Terry Francona go after an unprecedented September collapse. But Toronto wanted too much in return.

But after Bobby Valentine led the Red Sox to a last-place finish, they pursued Farrell again. This time, the teams agreed on Aviles, who hit .250 with 13 homers and 60 RBIs last season.

The Red Sox will get right-hander David Carpenter as part of the deal.
