  • Braves reach deal with OF B.J. Upton

Free-agent outfielder B.J. Upton has agreed to a multiyear deal with the Atlanta Braves pending a physical, a baseball source told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

Upton has spent his entire eight-year career with the Tampa Bay Rays. He batted .246 with 28 home runs, 78 RBIs and 31 stolen bases last season. He's averaged .255, 20 homers, 75 RBIs and 39 steals per season.

The Rays just gave third baseman Evan Longoria a six-year contract extension worth $100 million, but the team was in the bottom third of the league in payroll last season and was not expected to be able to afford Upton.

This one scares me to death if I'm a Braves fan. Since Upton had his breakout season in 2007 he's mainly just gotten worse. So much talent that he's wasting.

I hope he works more indepth with his approach to the fastball or the Braves just waisted their money.

Seems like a good pickup for the Braves.

5 years $75.25 million reports say. That is a lot, but at least he is good player.

For the money they spent, they should have just kept Bourne who they knew what to expect.

Atlanta offers a low pressure playing atmosphere similar to Tampa Bay - but without the distraction of the very high profile AL East teams - The Braves have lacked some stability in the outfield (exception being J. Hayward). I think he'll work out really well for the Braves.
