  • Anthony Rizzo Agrees To 7 Year $41 Million Contract

    Y! SPORTS

CHICAGO (AP) -- Anthony Rizzo and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a seven-year, $41 million contract.

Multiple media outlets reported the extension, citing unidentified sources, before the first baseman's agent, Marc Pollak, confirmed the deal to ESPNChicago.com.

According to reports, the deal includes two team options that could make it worth as much as $73 million over nine years.

The 23-year-old Rizzo is considered one of the centerpieces of the Cubs' rebuilding efforts.

He is hitting .288 with a .352 on-base percentage. He also has nine home runs and 28 RBIs in his third major league season.

Rizzo will regret that contract. The Cubs will still be in a rebuilding stage 10 years from now. They just don't play smart baseball and there's a lot of mismanagement. A study a few years ago, showed that day games have a detrimental effect on a team that plays 90% of their home games during the early afternoon and at least 90% of their road games in the evening hours, yet they don't change a thing. I know , up until 20 or so years ago, ownership was too cheap to install lights at Wrigley but being cheapskates is no excuse for losing. The Cubs look for excuses(Curse of the billy goat, Bartman), rather than look for ways to improve and win.

Some may see the long term signing of Rizzo as a good start....but good teams are built on pitching. The Cubs don't have that. Their farm system doesn't have that either.

Luck will only get you so far and the Cubs ran out of that 100 years ago.

That's a great signing. Epstein and crew are doing good work.

I hope they keep doing that "good work" and keep the Cubs in the basement of the division where they belong!

They've made huge improvements in the short time that there has been a management change.
