  • 1952 Topps baseball low # set

This summer I tackled the task of building a 1952 Topps baseball low # set (#1-310). So far I have 55 cards, including Mays. I am not being too picky with condition, but I am trying to keep the grades VG or better. I am trying to do this on a modest budget and more as a hobby than an investment, so I realize this may take years.

Just curious if anyone out there is doing the same thing. Would love to share progress, finds, etc.

    Thanks

I am working on the 1949 Bowman set. I currently have 23 cards all in ex condition. The 49 set contains 240 cards. There are 12 cards that have variations bringing the master set to 252 cards.

As of now my highlights include Robin Roberts rc, Phil Rizzuto (no name on front), Gil Hodges Those all book for a couple hundred each.

Best of luck to you. Dave
I collect a little bit of everything. But, if I never get back to you, your probably on Ignore!!

Thanks. Good luck to you also. The 49 Bowman is also a cool set. I also have a 52 Rizzuto, Monte Irvin, and Richie Ashburn. These old sets are challenging but are so much better to me than the modern cards. They are like artwork and small pieces of history. The biggest challenge for me is to be patient and not get carried away or I will blow the budget quickly.

I had started the 49 set years ago when I was much younger. Then came kids and layoffs so I sold them all. Had close to 50 back then. Started back up about 7 months ago (10 years later). It does take a slow and steady approach for those of us who dont have lots of cash. Im gonna use income tax for alot of the high numbers this year. Pick off stars and variations if I come across some deals.

I am working on commons at this point. I have been pretty lucky to pick up several commons for $3-6 each in VG-EX condition. I figure I can handle one or two per week by just giving up Starbucks! All about priorities, right?

Thats for sure!! Are you only doing one color back? I thought some of them had red or black backs.

The first series (1-80) has red and black backs. The black backs are supposedly a little tougher to get. I am trying to get the black backs, but if I find a good deal on a red one I don't pass it up. Getting both variations would be great, but that will be a goal for later after I (hopefully) finish the set.
