How much are minor league deals worth?
Last offseason Shaun Marcum got a one-year, $4 million deal from the Mets as a bounceback candidate, but after another injury wrecked season Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that he’s had to settle for a minor-league deal with the Indians.
Marcum went 1-10 with a 5.19 ERA in 78 innings for the Mets before being shut down to undergo thoracic outlet syndrome surgery. He’s still just 32 years old and Marcum was very good in 2011 and very good when healthy in 2012, but he’s no sure thing to contribute before the second half.
UPDATE: Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports that Marcum can opt out of the deal if he’s not on the 25-man roster Opening Day.
