Which cards to collect?

I decided to start a collection for my son who was born this year. So I decided to start with 2014-15 season since this is the season he was born in. I picked up a few boxes from Target this past weekend of Topps Series 1. I wanted to know if i'm purchasing the right cards. Will these hold value years from now? Should I look into different brands?

Hello! This is a tough question to answer to be honest. There are so many different sets of cards that it's tough to know what to get and what not to. There isn't really a good way, that I know of, to tell which will hold their values and which won't.

Perhaps a better option would be to target certain rookies from this season or if you have a favorite team with a highly touted rookie...that could be an option as well.

My sons got into football cards about 15 months ago, mainly my oldest boy and the rest tagged along. He is starting to discover his own likes and dislikes but he definitely picked up on what I had collected as a kid and is a big Joe Montana fan. They want to be like Dad so I really don't think you can go wrong.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of collecting our favorite team set first and then target rookies. Which would be a better option? Topps Chrome, Bowman Chrome, Topps Series 1 and 2?

I am really out of the loop on baseball. If I were going to do it I would go for the Bowman Chrome out of those options but hopefully someone else who has a better pulse on the current stuff can help you out more than me. What is your favorite team?

I can't say what will hold it's value the most, or what you should collect, but your favorite team is a good place to start. Just start picking up cards on notable players for him.

I'll tell you what I wish I had, and not from a 'value' perspective, but from a 'collectors' perspective. I wish I had a complete Topps Set from each year since I was born. Just the Topps baseball base set. No parallels. I have them from 1982, but I am missing a couple in the middle there. I just think it is kind of cool to have. That might be something. Buy a factory complete set for your boy each year, and then some choice notable players from your favorite team and throw those in an album for him maybe.

As a collector, I would have loved to have something like that.
