  • Athletics Sign Henderson Alvarez To 1 Year Deal

Henderson Alvarez agrees to one-year deal with Oakland A's

The Oakland Athletics have reached agreement on a one-year contract with free-agent right-hander Henderson Alvarez pending completion of a physical exam, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com.

The physical is more than a formality for Alvarez, who posted an 0-4 record with a 6.45 ERA in four starts in 2015 and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery in July.

Alvarez, who threw a no-hitter on the final day of the 2013 season, went 12-7 with a 2.65 ERA and made the National League All-Star team in 2014. He became a free agent when the Marlins non-tendered him in early December. Because of his shoulder injury, Alvarez is not expected to be ready to begin the 2016 season.

Alvarez, 25, signed his first professional contract with Toronto out of his native Venezuela in 2006. The Marlins acquired him from the Blue Jays in November 2012 as part of a 12-player trade that sent Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes and Josh Johnson to Toronto.
