  • Royals Sign Travis Wood To 2 Years $12 Million

Ex-Cubs left-hander Travis Wood agrees with Royals on 2-year deal

The Kansas City Royals agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent starter Travis Wood, a source told ESPN's Jerry Crasnick on Monday.

The deal is for $12 million, a source told ESPN, confirming multiple reports.

Wood, 30, will join the competition for a job in the team's starting rotation.

Wood was a do-it-all pitcher for the World Series champion Chicago Cubs in 2016: Not only did he hit a postseason home run, he played left field a couple of times during the regular season. He even made a nice play in one game, catching a ball at the wall at Wrigley Field.

Wood made 77 appearances, going 4-0 with a 2.95 ERA in 61 innings. His effectiveness on the mound varied, based on his workload. Manager Joe Maddon eventually called on Wood less often as he began to struggle in second half of the season.

Wood was reliable against lefties but not so much against righties, who produced a .344 on-base percentage against him in 2016. By comparison, lefties got on-base just 21 percent of the time off him.

He could offer the Royals plenty of versatility, as his athletic prowess allows him to pinch-hit, pinch-run or even play some defense. There were several times in 2016 where an injury knocked out a starter and Wood was called upon to keep a game close on a moment's notice. What he lacks in velocity he makes up in competitiveness, though he has to work the edges of the plate to be effective.
