  • Nuggets Hire Brian Shaw As Head Coach

    Y! SPORTS

After eight years of paying dues as an assistant, Brian Shaw landed his first head-coaching job with the Denver Nuggets.

Shaw told Yahoo! Sports on Monday that he has been hired as the Nuggets’ new head coach. The former NBA player was an assistant coach under Hall of Famer Phil Jackson from 2005-11 and with the Indiana Pacers the past two seasons. Shaw also interviewed for head-coaching openings with the Los Angeles Clippers and the Brooklyn Nets.

The Denver Post first reported Shaw's hiring.

"Appreciate the opportunity and [am] grateful that [Nuggets president] Josh Kroenke and [general manager] Tim Connelly had faith in me to do the job," Shaw told Yahoo! Sports.

Hollins, former Phoenix Suns coach Alvin Gentry, Nuggets assistant Melvin Hunt, former Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro and San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Brett Brown also interviewed for the position. Shaw replaces George Karl, who was recently fired after nine seasons and after being named the NBA's 2013 Coach of the Year. Shaw has won five NBA championships, three as a player for the Los Angeles Lakers and two as an assistant coach on Phil Jackson's staff.
