  • Cards bent after opening pack

    Hi all,

I've noticed recently when I've bought several boxes of basketball cards 13-14 Hoops, Prestige and 12-13 Elite (mainly foil) have been bent after opening packs.

However, with old school boxes such as 94-95 Hoops, 91-92 Skybox, 95-96 Topps that the cards were straight.

Has anyone else observed anything similar?

    Many thanks

Some products like Topps Chrome or Panini Prizm, the cards can be warped.

Was yours warped or dinged/dented on the corners?

I havent seen that with Prestige or Hoops. Mainly Topps Chrome and Panini Prizm.

It has to do with the card stock. Old school cards from the 80s/90s were made differently.

Yeah, that's what i thought mate. Cheaper materials with current stuff.

It's the same with books, the quality of book paper these days is awful cuz its cheap.

The quality of paper is bad due to recycling. Some things can only be recycled so many times before the quality starts to deteriorate. For example; Wal-Mart's plastic shopping bags.

The materials aren't necessarily cheaper on the cards that are warped. Chrome cards require a different type of card stock than non-glossy/non-chrome type cards. It seems like the only way that Topps can get it right is to use thicker card stock, which raises the price of the cards.

Warpage has plagued all card manufacturers at one time or another. I always thought the future of cards would be acetate. A lot easier to keep cards in mint condition but I'm sure cost was the deciding factor.

That's always the bottom line of any company, cost, cost, cost. Acetate cards would rock.

But really, the bottom line for collectors is the quality of the card. What's point of opening a pack of cards to have them warped, straight out of a brand new pack/box?

I understand how foil and chrome card can get warped. But for current base cards just made out of cardboard? It doesn't cut it.

Return the cards to the manufacturer for replacements.

Or buy a pack first and check to see if the cards are bent, if not, then buy a box.

                  Try before you buy.
