Report: Raptors to waive Anthony Bennett, sign Jason Thompson - CBSSports.com

The Toronto Raptors will waive forward Anthony Bennett in order to sign forward Jason Thompson, according to The Vertical's Shams Charania.

Toronto, Bennett's hometown team, is now the third team to dismiss the 22-year-old. He was drafted No. 1 overall in 2013 by the Cleveland Cavaliers, traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves a year later and released by Minnesota just before the start of this season's training camp. With the Raptors, he was unable to earn consistent playing time in a crowded frontcourt, averaging only 4.4 minutes in 19 appearances. He also played six games for their D-League affiliate, Raptors 905.

It was worth it for Toronto to take a chance on Bennett, even though it didn't work out. He remains an explosive athlete, though his potential still dwarfs his production in the NBA. If he's ever going to find a niche, he must improve his outside shot and become a much better defender. The Phoenix Suns are a "possible suitor" for him, according to The Vertical.
