  • Lakers Fire Byron Scott As Head Coach

Los Angeles Lakers' Byron Scott out after another franchise worst

They were 10 days too late in firing him. He should have been canned the day after the regular season ended. Lakers just lost two good coaching candidates in Thibodeau and Brooks since they didnt do this sooner.

The Los Angeles Lakers won't bring coach Byron Scott back next season after posting the worst record in franchise history in each of the two seasons since he was hired.

Scott, who sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne was informed of the decision Sunday night, had said he expected to be back a week ago, two days after the team closed its 2015-16 season with a win over the Utah Jazz, which gave the Lakers a franchise-worst 17-65 record.

Scott's contract included a team option for next season -- the third year of the deal -- that was tied to performance incentives that he did not meet, sources said.

A team option was also included for the fourth year.

"We would like to thank Byron for his hard work, dedication and loyalty over the last two years, but have decided it is in the best interest of the organization to make a change at this time," Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said in a statement.

Among the candidates the Lakers will look at are Luke Walton, Kevin Ollie and Jay Wright, sources told ESPN's Shelburne.

Scott, at 38-126 (.232), had the worst record of the 16 Lakers coaches who spent at least two seasons with the team at the helm.

Scott, whose 454-647 career record stands more games under .500 than any veteran coach in NBA history, has finished last in his division in each of his last five seasons as an NBA head coach. He has also coached the Nets, the New Orleans Hornets and Cavaliers.

Kupchak had said he and Lakers part-owner and executive vice president Jim Buss planned to have an "informal lunch" with Scott.
