Pistons sign Boban Marjanovic to 3-year, $21 million offer sheet, according to report - SBNation.com
Looking for additional cover behind Andre Drummond, the Detroit Pistons will sign Spurs giant Boban Marjanovic to a three-year, $21 million offer sheet, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Marjanovic is a restricted free agent, so the Spurs will have three days to match. However, it doesn't appear that they will, according to Stein.
Though Marjanovic was very productive on a per-minute basis, the move is still a bit curious because the Pistons already have a quality backup center in Aron Baynes. Detroit signed Baynes, from the Spurs of all teams, last summer for a nearly identical contract.
Nevertheless, Van Gundy clearly believes that Marjanovic's production can translate in limited minutes. The giant 7'3 center often didn't play until garbage time because of San Antonio's deep front line, but if you extrapolate his production to 36 minutes, he would have averaged 21 points and 14 rebounds a game.
Obviously, Marjanovic would never actually reach those numbers because he is too slow to play that much, and did it against third-string opposition. However, there is clearly a role for a player that can rebound and finish in the paint.
