  • Wizards Sign Marcus Thornton To 1 Year $1 Million

Wizards bring back shooting guard Marcus Thornton on one-year deal

The Washington Wizards continued filling out the back end of their roster by re-signing guard Marcus Thornton on a one-year deal for the veteran’s minimum.

Thornton, 29, averaged 9.7 points in 61 games between the Houston Rockets and Wizards last season. He was nearly traded by the Rockets to the Detroit Pistons at the trade deadline, but after the trade was voided because the Pistons found issues with forward Donatas Motiejunas during his physical, Thornton wound up being bought out and signing with the Wizards instead.

Now that he’s back in Washington, Thornton will serve as a backup at shooting guard behind Bradley Beal, where he’ll be able to provide some scoring punch off the bench. With career averages of 12.3 points in 23.8 minutes per game, Thornton isn’t afraid to shoot the ball, and he’ll help a Wizards’ second unit that struggled to produce points with John Wall on the bench last season.
