Miami Heat waive Derrick Williams and sign rookie forward Okaro White

MIAMI -- The Miami Heat have waived forward Derrick Williams and are signing rookie forward Okaro White through the 2017-18 season.

The Heat, who will play in Minnesota on Monday night, are 10-0 since signing White to a pair of 10-day contracts. White was added to the roster when Miami got permission from the NBA to carry a 16th player because of an abundance of injuries.

But to keep him long-term, the Heat had to create a roster spot.

That meant parting ways with Williams, who appeared in 25 games for Miami and started 11. He averaged 5.9 points on 39 percent shooting with the Heat.

White has averaged 4.1 points on 48 percent shooting in his brief stint so far with the Heat.

Cleveland Cavaliers plan to sign Derrick Williams to 10-day contract

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed forward Derrick Williams to a 10-day contract, the team announced Thursday.

Williams, the No. 2 pick in the 2011 draft, was immediately thrown into the fire, scoring 12 points in 22 minutes in his Cavs debut Thursday in a 118-109 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Miami Heat released Williams, 25, on Tuesday. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds over 25 games for the Heat.

"He can play the 3 and the 4," Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said of Williams. "He's a good defender on-ball. Has athleticism. So, I'll just try to work him in with that second unit, let LeBron handle it, let him play off LeBron a little bit with [Kyle] Korver and those guys and just see how we can get him acclimated."
