  • Holmgren ready to sign deal to become Cleveland's 'Football Czar'

Sounds like Lerner is about to do something right for the first time as owner....

CLEVELAND (AP)—The Cleveland Browns may have finally found their leader.

Former Seattle and Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren, with one Super Bowl title and success brimming from an impressive NFL resume, is spending his second day meeting with the Browns about running their football operations.

Holmgren arrived Monday after being invited by Cleveland owner Randy Lerner. He was again at team headquarters in Berea, Ohio, on Tuesday along with his agent, Bob LaMonte. Holmgren is not scheduled to leave Tuesday, a sign that could indicate the sides are working out details on a contract.

A person familiar with the meetings has told The Associated Press that former Seattle and Green Bay coach Mike Holmgren is visiting with the Cleveland Browns for a second day. The person spoke on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, because Cleveland owner Randy Lerner wants to keep his search secret.

First we beat Pittsburgh, then we potentially FINALLY make a smart decision to bring in someone to oversee the team that knows what he's doing? Solid week if you ask me!

could be good- lord knows mangini cant draft, so if holmgren is given control of personnel decisions, it will help the team quite a bit

Not smart for the Browns to bring in Holmgren? Huh?

Gotcha....but they aren't replacing him with Holmgren.

No they shouldn't. Holmgren's perfect job is to overlook the entire organization, and have major control over who they draft, who the coaches are, what trades they make, etc.

He basically would have the same job Parcells has in Miami....and that's worked out pretty well for them.

Having him as our 'football czar' makes perfect sense. Because now we can still bring in a GM who knows what he's doing, and go find a coach that fits what Holmgren wants to do in Cleveland.

i wouldnt be shocked if mangini is kept around- the team seems to be buying in to what hes selling, finally- and its tough to say what might have happened had a bunch of guys stayed healthy. i can see him staying, but having no say in the draft or in any FA acquisitions

I agree....I have no problems with Mangini being the coach next year (beyond that should be determined by how good/bad they play next year)....the players do seem to finally be drinking his kool-aid. And if you take away any control he has over the draft/trades, he might not be a bad coach.

He just needs to give his players time to breathe every once in a while and quit overworking them.
