  • Drew Brees Signs 5 Years $100 Million

Unsigned franchise player Drew Brees characterized his contract talks with the Saints as "extremely frustrating" on Wednesday.
It's no secret that the sides haven't made a lick of progress since winter time. "It's been extremely frustrating for me," Brees said. "I don't think the negotiation should have been this difficult. ... We've reached out on a number of occasions and at times I've been frustrated by the lack of response." Brees questioned the Saints' "urgency" to do a deal. Perhaps they don't feel any because they want Brees to play out the season on his franchise tender.

The ugly part of sports. The Saints spent 30+ years as a horrible franchise. Now, they have a Superbowl and many playoff appearances thanks to a cast off QB not many teams wanted. Take care of him!!!
Favorite baseball players include: Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Kirby Puckett, Pete Rose, Tyler Colvin Mark Appel
Favorite football players include: Peyton Manning, John Elway, Daunte Culpepper, Mike Alstott, Blake Bortles, and Dri Archer

Saints owner Tom Benson isn't worried about unsigned franchise player Drew Brees' contract situation.
"It's going to be worked out," Benson said Friday. "I assure you that Drew Brees will be playing here." Sensing public unease, Benson has joined GM Mickey Loomis in guaranteeing a deal will get done after Brees called the talks "extremely frustrating" in a Wednesday radio interview. At a standstill since last summer, the sides have until July 16 to reach a long-term accord.

Unsigned Saints franchise player Drew Brees will not participate in this week's mandatory minicamp.
He was never expected to attend this week's workouts. With GM Mickey Loomis spending the week evaluating basketball prospects as part of his new role as New Orleans Hornets adviser, a deal doesn't seem to be on the horizon. The sides have until July 16 to reach a long-term agreement in their never-ending talks.

federal arbitrator has ruled in Drew Brees' favor in his franchise tag grievance.
Brees successfully argued that players can be franchise tagged only three total times in their careers. The Saints were arguing players could be tagged three times by any one team. Before this year, Brees was also franchised by the Chargers in 2005. It means Brees would be eligible for a 144 percent raise were he to be tagged for a third and final time in 2013. That would put his total 2012-13 earnings at $40 million instead of $36 million. The ruling gives Brees a nice bit of added leverage as the sides attempt to wrap up long-term talks before the July 16 deadline.

According to Profootballtalk.com, "there’s a growing belief in some league circles" that unsigned franchise player Drew Brees will play under his one-year tender.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune guessed Monday that the sides would reach a long-term agreement before next week's deadline, but there's been strikingly little evidence of recent progress. However, PFT agrees the "smart money" remains on a deal being reached. Brees has already assured that he would "never sit out the season."

Unsigned franchise player Drew Brees has no plans to report to training camp without a long-term deal in place by Monday's deadline, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
Brees is essentially posturing through the media in an attempt to gain an upper hand in contract talks that have shown little progress to date. Although Brees has stated that he would never sit out the season, it appears that he's perfectly willing to miss part or all of camp in a leverage ploy. Profootballtalk reports Brees' camp still hasn't responded to the team's latest offer from early June. Brees is seeking $20.5 million per year while the Saints are reportedly offering $19.25 million -- slightly more than Peyton Manning's annual salary. Expect the intensity of negotiations to pick up closer to Monday's 4:00 p.m. ET deadline.
