  • Jets bring back WR Braylon Edwards

The Jets were awarded Braylon Edwards off waivers Tuesday afternoon to shore up a depleted wide receivers corps, just days after he referred to New York higher-ups as idiots.

The Seahawks cut Edwards last week, but shortly before he was given his walking papers the former first-round pick out of the University of Michigan went off on how the Jets had handled the Mark Sanchez situation. Specifically, Edwards referred to the higher-ups as the "idiots calling the shots."

New York did not sign Edwards after the 2010 season, opting instead for Plaxico Burress. But earlier this season, the Jets showed interest in bringing Edwards back. Santonio Holmes had been lost for the year due to injury and Edwards was one of the options the team explored, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reported Sunday. But at that time in the season, the Seahawks still thought Edwards would play a role for them.

The Seahawks cut Edwards on Dec. 4 -- one day after his "idiot" comment. One week later he was back in New York.

Edwards later apologized, and apparently that was enough to get him back in the Jets' good graces -- that and uncertainty at wide receiver. Clyde Gates has missed two games while recovering from a concussion and rookie Stephen Hill's status is up in the air after he suffered a sprained lateral collateral ligament in his right knee against the Jaguars on Sunday.

Edwards was taken by the Browns with the third overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft. He spent the first five years of his career in Cleveland, his best season coming in 2007 when he had 80 receptions for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns. He played for the Jets in 2009 and 2010 and totaled 88 catches, 1,445 yards and 11 TDs. Edwards was in San Francisco for nine games last season before signing with the Seahawks in 2012.

Now he's back in New York with the Jets. And despite everything that's happened this season to Edwards and the Jets, New York still can make the playoffs (it's not impossible!).
