Panthers exercised QB Cam Newton's fifth-year club option for 2015.
It means the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 draft is slated to earn $14.67 million in 2015, though that will only be the case if the sides can't agree on an extension before then. There's a strong chance a long-term deal is hammered out by next offseason, if not this summer. Carolina's franchise player is currently scheduled a bargain $3.378 million for 2014.
