  • 49ers bracing for Patrick Willis retirement

A source tells Yahoo the 49ers are expecting ILB Patrick Willis to retire.
Earlier Monday morning, PFT's Mike Florio teased a bomb coming out of San Francisco. We now know what it is. Willis is only 30 years old, so we're guessing this early retirement has to do with the troublesome toe injury that ended his 2014 season after six games. It would be a sad end to a dominant career that saw Willis get named a first-team All-Pro five times in eight seasons. His retirement would net the 49ers $7.4M in cap space.

The 49ers officially announced Patrick Willis' retirement Tuesday.
Willis is walking away at age 30 on his own terms, a rarity in professional sports. A source told CSN Bay Area that, "Patrick is not having fun. He doesn’t want to play football." So it appears that the best linebacker of his generation is done, leaving behind five first-team All-Pro appearances and borderline Hall of Fame credentials. Willis was the game's best cover linebacker and a premier run-stuffer, racking up 930 tackles, 16 forced fumbles, 20.5 sacks and 53 pass breakups in his eight seasons. His retirement nets the 49ers $7.4M in cap space.
