  • Capitals Sign Justin Williams To 2 Years $6.5 Million

2015 NHL free agency -- Washington Capitals lure 2014 Conn Smythe Trophy winner Justin Williams

Justin Williams is bringing his three Stanley Cup rings to Washington.

The veteran winger, an unrestricted free agent, signed a two-year, $6.5 million deal with the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

"Justin is a proven winner and we feel he will be a great addition to our club," general manager Brian MacLellan said in a news release. "We felt it was important for our team to add someone of his caliber, as a hockey player and as a veteran leader."

Williams, 33, has spent the last six-and-a-half years with the Los Angeles Kings, with whom he won two Cups, adding to the one he won with Carolina in 2006.

A clutch playoff performer who won the 2014 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, Williams wanted to play on another contender and chose a bit less money to do so, a source told ESPN.com.

Williams had 18 goals and 23 assists in 81 games this past season.
